What can you do to increase tyre life?
1) WHEEL ALIGNMENT
A vehicle is said to be properly aligned when all suspension and steering components are sound and when the tyre and wheel assemblies are running straight and true. Proper alignment is necessary for even tread wear and precise steering.
Uneven front, or, rear tyre wear, or changes in your vehicle's handling or steering response (ie. pulling to one side) can indicate misalignment. Many vehicles today are equipped with rear suspensions that can be adjusted for alignment. Your vehicle may need a "front-end" alignment or a "four-wheel" alignment, depending on the symptoms you are experiencing.
The moderate cost of having your vehicle aligned can more than pay for itself in tyre mileage, performance and comfort. Wheel alignment and suspension settings should be checked between 10 & 20 000 kms or when one suspects that a pothole or bad bump might have caused a change to these settings.
2) WHEEL BALANCING
Properly balanced tyres are important for driving comfort and long tyre life. Unbalanced tyres can cause vibration, resulting in driver fatigue, premature tyre wear and unnecessary wear to your vehicle's suspension. Tyres should be balanced when they are mounted on wheels for the first time or when they are remounted after repair. Tyres should be re-balanced at the first sign of vibration or "shimmy". Vibration may also be due to misalignment ar mechanical problems.
3)DRIVING STYLE
Driving style plays a big role and, factors such as high speed, rapid cornering, sudden braking and rapid acceleration are major contributors to increasing tyre wear.
4) INFLATION PRESSURE
Inflation pressure influences the way in which the tread makes contact with the ground and it influences the heat build up in the tyre during driving. Both these factors will contribute to increased tyre wear. Checking inflation pressures, at least twice a month, is the best way to ensure tyre inflation problems are avoided.
Proper inflation means that the whole tread is in contact with the road.
